Chinese Impressed Gray Pottery Handled Vessel

An ancient Chinese gray pottery vessel attributed to the Eastern Zhou to Warring States period, 5th-3rd century BCE. The rounded body is densely covered with a remarkably fine impressed textile or cord pattern and fitted with asymmetric bronze-inspired attachments, including a substantial arched strap handle and an applied ring-form lug with scrolling ornament.
The impressed surface treatment, gray-fired ceramic body and unusual applied fittings are characteristic of early Chinese pottery traditions associated with the lower Yangtze region. Attribution and dating are based on form, construction, ceramic body and visible surface characteristics; the vessel has not been scientifically tested for age.

- Property from an important private collection, assembled by a dealer and collector over more than six decades.
- Condition
- Extensive surface weathering, mineral and earthen accretion, abrasions and wear consistent with age. Applied elements show losses and wear; small opening to underside. Please refer to photographs.
