Mambila Tadep Ritual Figure, Cameroon-Nigeria Border Region

A carved wood ritual figure attributed to the Mambila peoples of the Cameroon-Nigeria border region, of the type commonly known as tadep. The compact figure is distinguished by an expressive face with projecting eyes, broad cheeks, an exaggerated open mouth and a wide flat disc-like element above the head. The arms rise and curve around the face, creating a strong openwork composition above the compact lower body and integral base.

Tadep figures are associated with Mambila ritual and protective traditions and are known for highly expressive facial carving, compact proportions and varied treatments of the head and limbs. The present example retains a dark, heavily worn surface with extensive exposed reddish-brown wood, suggesting prolonged handling and age-related use.
