Toussian Bird Plank Mask, Burkina Faso

monumental carved wood plank mask attributed to the Toussian peoples of Burkina Faso, with three stylized bird heads rising from the upper edge. The white-painted surface is decorated with geometric X-form bands, circular appliques and red seed inlay, with pierced borders for attachment of a fiber costume. The reverse retains a shallow facial recess and pierced eyeholes. Likely mid-20th century, possibly earlier.
