Ngbaka or Related Male Figure, Democratic Republic of the Congo

A carved wood standing male figure attributed to the Ngbaka or a closely related people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The figure is modeled with a large rounded head, heavy projecting eyelids, broad nose, pronounced lips, large ears and deeply incised geometric scarification across the forehead, cheeks and face. The elongated body has pendant arms, a narrow torso, strong thighs and broad feet.
The surface displays a dry dark brown patina with areas of lighter wear, abrasion and oxidation. The feet and lower extremities show substantial age-related wear, while the carving retains a strong sculptural presence characteristic of Central African figural traditions.

- Age-related wear, surface abrasions, scattered small losses and minor cracking. Wear to the feet and extremities. Please refer to photographs.
