Baule Seated Female Figure, Cote d'Ivoire

Carved wood female figure attributed to the Baule peoples of Cote d'Ivoire, seated with the hands resting upon the knees and the feet placed on an integral base. The figure has a large sensitively modeled head with downcast eyes, a long straight nose, small mouth, cheek scarification and an elaborate crested coiffure. The back is further detailed with raised scarification motifs. The surface retains a deep reddish-brown to black patina with areas of handling wear and lighter exposure at high points.

The refined facial treatment, coiffure, scarification and composed seated posture are consistent with Baule female figure traditions. Figures of this type are commonly associated with idealized female representations and may relate to spirit-spouse imagery known as blolo bla, although the precise original ritual function cannot be confirmed from the surviving evidence alone.
