Central African Male Figure, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Carved wood standing male figure from the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, probably within the Buyu-Metoko cultural sphere. The figure has an elongated body, oversized oval head, prominent lidded eyes, geometric facial scarification, patterned coiffure, pendant arms and incised circular motifs extending down the torso. The carving shows substantial surface wear and a dark, aged patina.

- Provenance
- Property from an important private collection, assembled by a dealer and collector over more than six decades. An attached tag identifies the object as Lot 239 and states that it was not part of the Jean-Pierre Hallet Collection, suggesting it was likely offered alongside or in connection with material from the same sale or dispersal.
- Condition
- Age-related wear, abrasions and losses throughout. Pronounced old drying split to the reverse of the head, additional checking and surface erosion, and wear to the feet. Old paper label remains to one foot. See photographs.
